- Removal of double plastic packaging for fruit and
selling bunched vegetables such as kale and silver beet
without plastic
- Replacing packaging for a wide range of meat and
poultry products with packaging made from recycled
and renewable materials
- Replacing existing single use fresh produce bags with
bags which have 30% recycled content
- Providing customers with an option to recycle all
their soft plastics at every Coles supermarket across
Australia, to then be converted into a range of products

44% of consumers struggle with packaging everyday,
taking an emotional toll on consumers who resort to tools
such as knives, scissors and screwdrivers that increase
the chance of injury as well as wastage. When packaging
can’t be opened, it presents a major barrier to consumers
being able to use the product it contains, with 21% of
consumers turning to competitor brands after negative
experiences. This presentation will discuss:
- Opportunities for companies to innovate and
differentiate their products through accessible
packaging and avoid unnecessary negative emotional
and physical impacts on consumers
- Accessibility as a strategy to target baby boomers, who
hold a significant share of Australia’s wealth, through
understanding their needs and abilities
- Recognizing and complying with Packaging
Accessibility Ratings, used in the Australian hospital
system
Alexandra Brayshaw
2:40 pm - 3:20 pm CASE STUDY: HealthShare NSW Case Study: My Food Choice- Transforming Patient Food Services
The current method of preparing and serving patient meals in hospital is outdated, having changed little in the past 30 years. It does not reflect changes in technology and modern food service systems, or support a modern hospital system with shorter lengths of stay, advanced technology and a greater need for responsive and personalized patient care.
Delays of 30 hours between the time the patient ordered and received their meal was common. This was not sustainable and resulted in high levels of waste and non-choice default meals, which contributed to patient dissatisfaction. The paper-based ordering system was inefficient, while the production line model of preparing meals in the kitchen meant that staff were isolated from patients and their needs.
- Reducing the time between ordering and receiving meals to four hours or less while also improving the choice, quality and nutrition of food choices
- Empowering staff and support clinicians with new technology and systems to improve business processes
- Increased usage of pre-packaged meals to reduce wash- related activity, decreasing the wash process time by 42%
